Caroline M. and George Babb letters, 1891-1894.

1891-1894

Sixty-five letters, mostly written by Caroline to family and friends, describing travels with her husband, George, from Maine to Hawaii, via San Francisco, and their experiences while teaching there. The letters recount everyday life and activities along with the physical characteristics and customs of Hawaii. They provide observations surrounding the overthrow of Hawaii's monarchy in 1893, most notably in George's letter of Jan. 18, and Caroline's letter of Feb. 9. Also, in a letter from March 6, [1892?], Caroline refers to her students' opinions regarding the presence of "whites" and U.S. missionaries; in another, on Nov. 3, 1892, she mentions the murder of forty missionaries in China. Other letters discuss their travels throughout the Islands, local politics, the death of the daughter of John L. Stevens (U.S. minister to Hawaii), and contributions of the Bishop family to the islands. Three letters include sketches of the school campus, the island of Oahu, and a volcano, and several of George's letters contain appended notes from Caroline (and vice versa).
